ALBUM: Common – Let Love (Zip File)
The Chicago veteran returns with his 12th studio album Let Love, almost three decades since his debut. Inspired by his autobiography Let Love Have the Last Word, published in May, the 11 songs feature collaborations with Daniel Caesar, Swizz Beatz, Leon Bridges, Dwele, and Leikeli47, produced by Karriem Riggins, Samora Pinderhughes, A-Trak, and iconic J Dilla (“HER Love”).
He recounts a late-night phone call he got from his daughter on the Jill Scott-assisted “Show Me That You Love,” which compelled him to reconsider his attitude to fatherhood while taking on mental health and sexual assault on the strong “Home Memories” featuring BJ the Chicago Kid.
Common defines the album as “Marvin Gaye meets DJ Premier meets Radiohead.” “In this discussion, the book was the seed that began me,” he told Apple Music. “I think the energy of love and the act of love, the exercise of love, is the thing we can use as individuals and as individuals to overcome the heaviness of the times. When I say’ Let Love,’ I mean putting love into practice. Let love be the law we abide by.
